EMSA’s Power Readers Program will instill the power of reading before the pivotal 3rd grade year. Third grade reading proficiency is one of the most important predictors for high school graduation.
Until 3rd grade, students learn to read; after 3rd grade, students read to learn. In the United States, 74% of students who struggle with reading will fall behind peers and never catch up because the majority of their curriculum will be taught through reading.
Literacy for Liberation
Power Readers is a part of EMSA’s Literacy for Liberation Program which promotes literacy that nurtures children to find their inner changemaker. This program removes systemic barriers for students by providing them with the tools to increase their literacy and the confidence to find their inner voice and cultivate changemaking.
